After I graduated from the University of Kentucky with degrees in Business Economics and Business Management, I was quickly hired by a local developer and home builder. It did not take long for me to realize that I had found my niche in residential construction. I absorbed an abundant amount of information during my time with that company. But most of all I learned what not to do when I start and as I grow my own company. I saw first hand what happens if you do not take care of your customers and keep the promises you make. I heard the frustration in the customers’ voices when the person answering their call did not have the authority to address their concern. I saw construction superintendents who did not care about the quality of the house they were building, but only cared about the check they received on Fridays. I saw an owner too busy making promises he had no intentions of keeping to prospective client, that he never had time to address the concerns of his existing customers. You see many builders feel like once the customer signs the contract or closes on the house the deal is done and the promises do not have to be kept any longer. A builder loses much more than a repeat customer when he fails to uphold his end of the bargain. The realtor will think twice about showing his product to prospective buyer. The subcontractor will doubt the trustworthiness of his boss and quality will suffer, The banker will wonder if the builder can actually sell the product he is proposing for financing. Finally, the customer will always have a sour taste in their mouth. All this can be avoided if the builder acted with integrity, honesty, character, and professionalism. I stress this because if I only learned one thing from my previous employer it was the future of your company is in the hands of your home owner.
With all this in mind my wife and I started Via Vitae Development, LLC. We made a promise when we started this company. We promised never to promise more than we can deliver, always do what is right and just, never turn our backs to our customers, suppliers, vendors, or subcontractors, and always stand behind the product we build. There is a lot at stake here because if I fail in keeping this promise, I fail to provide for my family, employees, and their families. Thus I am held to a higher standard to be a man of my word to my customers, suppliers, vendors, and subcontractors.
But someone who does not know, and then does something wrong, will be punished only lightly. When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required. Luke 12:48
